The Ultimate Guide to Saving Your Wedding Bouquet

Everything You Need to Know About Preserving Your Wedding Flowers

Why Preserve Your Wedding Bouquet?

Your wedding flowers were chosen with intention. Maybe you selected your grandmother's favorite bloom, incorporated your birth month flower, or chose roses because of their meaning. Perhaps you spent months working with your florist to create the perfect arrangement.

All of that thought, meaning, and love is wrapped up in your bouquet.

Preservation transforms those fleeting fresh flowers into a permanent keepsake that captures the essence of your wedding day. Unlike photographs alone, a preserved bouquet gives you something tangible—a piece of your wedding you can touch, display, and pass down.

More Than Just Flowers

Preserved wedding bouquets become:

  • Daily reminders of your commitment and love story
  • Conversation pieces in your home that spark memories
  • Heirloom items to pass down to future generations
  • Anniversary gifts that appreciate in meaning over time
  • Art pieces that complement your home decor

The Cost of Not Preserving

Without preservation, your wedding bouquet faces one of three fates:

  1. Thrown away within a week as flowers wilt
  2. Dried at home with unpredictable results (and no way to display beautifully)
  3. Forgotten in a box, eventually crumbling to dust

Many brides we work with express regret that they didn't know about preservation options sooner. If you're reading this before your wedding, you're already ahead—you have time to plan.

If you're reading this after your wedding, don't worry. As long as your flowers are still in reasonable condition (or even if they've dried), there are options for you.

I could not be happier with my experience working with Element Design! I'm absolutely in LOVE with my tray and coasters. Not only are they beautiful but functional as well! The customer service team was very sweet and helpful each time I would reach out with questions. I cannot wait to use them for years to come.

Preservation Methods Explained

Not all preservation methods are created equal. Here's an honest breakdown of your options:

Professional Pressed Flower Preservation

What it is: Fresh flowers are carefully pressed flat using professional techniques, then arranged artfully in frames or encased in resin.

Pros:

  • Creates stunning, gallery-quality artwork
  • Flowers are completely flat and stable
  • Multiple display options (frames, resin, coasters, trays)
  • Professional results with predictable outcomes
  • Lasts indefinitely when properly cared for

Best for: Brides who want their bouquet transformed into elegant wall art or functional pieces they'll use daily.

Freeze-Drying

What it is: Flowers are frozen and moisture is removed through sublimation, preserving their 3D shape.

Pros: Maintains three-dimensional shape and good initial color retention.

Cons: Extremely fragile (can shatter if touched), requires sealed display case, colors fade significantly over time, and can be more expensive with limited display options.

DIY Home Drying

What it is: Hanging bouquet upside down to air dry, or pressing flowers in books.

Pros: Free/low cost, no shipping required.

Cons: Unpredictable results, colors often become brown/muddy, no professional finishing, difficult to display attractively, flowers become brittle and fragile, can develop mold if not dried properly.

Resin Encapsulation

What it is: Pressed flowers are set in clear resin to create functional items like trays, coasters, and jewelry.

Pros: Creates functional art you use daily, flowers are protected within resin, unique modern aesthetic, durable and long-lasting.

Best for: Brides who want functional keepsakes rather than wall art.

The Pressed Flower Preservation Process

Understanding how preservation works helps set realistic expectations and ensures you're prepared for each step.

Step 1: You Ship Your Bouquet

Within 3-5 days of your wedding, you'll carefully pack and ship your fresh bouquet to our studio in Easton, Pennsylvania. The sooner we receive your flowers, the better the preservation results. Fresh flowers with good moisture content press more beautifully than flowers that have begun to dry.

Step 2: We Receive and Assess

When your bouquet arrives, our team carefully unpacks and assesses each bloom. We note flower types and conditions, color variations, any damage from shipping, and special elements like ribbon, pins, or charms. We photograph your bouquet upon arrival for our records.

Step 3: Professional Pressing

Each flower is individually prepared and pressed using professional techniques developed over years of experience. This isn't like pressing flowers in a heavy book—we use specialized equipment and methods that apply consistent, even pressure, control moisture removal, minimize color loss, and preserve petal integrity. Pressing takes several weeks to months as moisture is gradually removed from each bloom.

Step 4: Design and Arrangement

Once pressing is complete, our design team arranges your flowers. Depending on your service level:

Tulip Experience (Hands-Off): Our designers create your piece based on your preferences. You receive your finished keepsake.

Peony (Proofing) Experience (Hands-On): Collaborate with our design team, review digital proofs, provide feedback before final production, and have more input on placement and arrangement.

Step 5: Final Production

Your pressed flowers are either mounted in a frame with archival materials or set in resin to create functional pieces. Each piece is quality-checked, packaged with care, and shipped to you.

Step 6: Your Keepsake Arrives

Your preserved wedding bouquet arrives ready to display. Frames come ready to hang; resin pieces are ready to use.

Choosing Your Preservation Style

Your preserved bouquet can become many different things. Here's how to choose:

Pressed Flower Frames

The classic choice for wedding bouquet preservation. Your flowers are arranged artfully in a frame, creating wall art that captures your wedding day.

Frame Sizes:

  • 16x20 — Full bouquet with room to breathe (starting at $470)
  • 10x10 — Smaller bouquets or select blooms ($325)
  • 6x6 Mini — Accent pieces or gifts ($270)

Frame Styles:

  • Natural Wood — Warm, organic aesthetic that complements most decor
  • White Wood — Clean, bright look perfect for modern or coastal homes
  • Black Wood — Elegant, modern, and crisp contrast to your natural color tones.
  • Gray Wood — Blends into contemporary homes wall decor to make the design stand out
  • Walnut Wood — A warm and high-end finish which compliments traditionally styled homes beautifully
  • Barn Wood — Rustic charm for farmhouse or bohemian styles
  • Gold Wood — Elegant, luxe option for traditional spaces

Resin Preservation

Transform your bouquet into functional art you'll use every day.

  • Serving Tray (12x16) — $470 Perfect for coffee tables, bar carts, ottomans, vanities
  • Display Tray (13x4) — $295 Perfect for holding soap pumps or as a catch all on an end table
  • Coaster Set (4 pieces) — $270 Perfect for daily use and gifts for wedding party
  • Ring Dish — $125 Perfect for holding your wedding rings daily
  • Ornament (4x4) — $150 Perfect for Christmas tree, year-round display

How to Decide

Do you want wall art or something functional? Wall art leads to a pressed flower frame. Functional daily use leads to resin pieces.

How much of your bouquet do you want to preserve? Entire bouquet works best with a 16x20 frame or serving tray. Partial/highlights work well with a 10x10 frame, coasters, or ring dish.

What's your budget? Starting options include the 6x6 mini frame ($270) or ring dish ($125). Mid-range includes coaster sets ($270) or 10x10 frames ($325). Full experience includes 16x20 frames ($470) or serving trays ($470).

Color Changes: What to Expect

This might be the most important chapter in this guide. Setting realistic expectations about color changes will help you love your preserved piece.

The Golden Rule

Bright, rich pigments will remain vibrant. Pastels become more muted. White flowers develop an antiqued, golden appearance.

This transformation is natural and unavoidable—it's part of what makes pressed flower art so unique. Rather than fighting these changes, we encourage you to embrace them.

Rose Color Changes

White Roses: Fresh bright white becomes creamy blonde, soft ivory, antique tone. The antiqued look adds vintage charm.

Red Roses: Classic red becomes deep burgundy, may develop violet undertones. Often more dramatic and striking than fresh.

Pink Roses: Soft pink becomes lighter, more muted pink; may shift toward white. Deeper pinks hold color better than light pinks.

Quicksand Roses (popular dusty blush variety): Dusty pink/mauve can shift to bluish-gray, soft gray, or greenish-yellow. One of the most dramatic color transformations.

Peach Roses: Warm peach reveals yellow undertones as orange fades. Still beautiful, just different.

Other Popular Flowers

Peonies follow similar patterns to roses—white peonies develop cream tones, pink peonies may soften.

Ranunculus: White becomes soft buttery yellow. Pastels become slightly paler. Red becomes deep maroon.

Dahlias adopt an antiqued look; orange varieties often brighten; red varieties deepen to burgundy.

Greenery generally maintains color well, though may shift from bright green to olive or sage tones.

Why We Embrace Color Changes

The transformation your flowers undergo is part of their journey. Just as your marriage will grow and change over time, so too did your bouquet transform during preservation. Many clients tell us they love their preserved piece even more than they expected—the antiqued, artistic quality creates something that feels like a treasured heirloom rather than a snapshot.

"From their customer service to the quality of their products- Element Design is top tier. I had such a seamless and pleasant experience from start to finish. My framed bouquet is absolutely stunning and I couldn't be happier!"

Caring for Your Bouquet Before Preservation

What you do with your bouquet between your wedding and shipping it to us significantly impacts preservation results. Follow these guidelines for the best outcome.

Immediately After Your Ceremony

  1. Designate someone to be responsible for your bouquet (maid of honor, coordinator, family member)
  2. Keep it in water during the reception if possible
  3. Avoid extreme temperatures — don't leave it in a hot car or direct sunlight
  4. Handle gently — bruised petals don't press as well

After the Reception

Best Practice: Refrigerate

  • Place bouquet in a vase with fresh water
  • Store in refrigerator (not freezer)
  • Keep away from fruits and vegetables (they release gases that age flowers)
  • Ideal temperature: 34-36 degrees F

What NOT to Do

  • Don't hang it upside down to dry (unless you want DIY dried flowers, not professional preservation)
  • Don't put it in the freezer (ice crystals damage cell structure)
  • Don't leave it in a hot car (even for a few hours)
  • Don't spray it with hairspray or preservatives (these can interfere with pressing)
  • Don't remove it from water until you're ready to pack and ship

Timeline for Best Results

1-3 days after wedding: Fresh, optimal — Excellent preservation quality

4-5 days: Good condition — Very good quality

6-7 days: Starting to soften — Good quality

8+ days: Wilting — Depends on care

Our recommendation: Ship within 3-5 days of your wedding for best results.

How to Ship Your Bouquet

Shipping fresh flowers across the country might sound daunting, but thousands of brides do it successfully every year. Here's exactly how.

Materials You'll Need

  • Sturdy shipping box (slightly larger than your bouquet)
  • Tissue paper or newspaper
  • Plastic bag (gallon size or larger)
  • Paper towels
  • Packing tape
  • Shipping label

Packing Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the stems — Wrap stem ends in damp paper towels. Cover damp towels with a plastic bag. Secure with rubber band.

Step 2: Wrap the bouquet — Loosely wrap entire bouquet in tissue paper. Don't compress or crush flowers. Leave room for air circulation.

Step 3: Box it up — Place crumpled newspaper or tissue in the bottom of the box. Nestle bouquet gently inside. Fill gaps with more tissue (loosely). Close box without crushing flowers.

Step 4: Label and ship — Mark box "FRAGILE - PERISHABLE." Ship via 2-day or overnight delivery. Avoid shipping Friday through Sunday (prevents weekend warehouse sitting).

Shipping Tips

  • Ship early in the week (Monday-Wednesday ideal)
  • Choose expedited shipping (2-day or overnight)
  • Track your package and let us know it's coming
  • Include your order information inside the box
  • Consider weather — avoid shipping during extreme heat waves

Local Drop-Off Option

If you're in the Easton, Pennsylvania area, you can schedule an appointment to drop off your bouquet in person. This eliminates shipping concerns entirely.

Timeline and What to Expect

Preservation isn't instant—it's an art that takes time. Here's what to expect.

Overall Timeline: 6-12 Months

Why so long? Quality preservation cannot be rushed. Pressing alone takes several weeks as moisture is gradually removed. Design requires careful planning and arrangement. Production of frames and resin pieces takes time. Quality control ensures every piece meets our standards.

Milestone Timeline

Your wedding — Day 0

Ship bouquet — Days 1-5

We receive flowers — Days 3-7

Pressing process — Weeks 1-16

Design phase — Weeks 16-20

Production — Weeks 20-28

Quality check and shipping — Weeks 28-32

You receive your piece — Approximately 6-12 months

Note: Complex pieces or high-volume seasons may extend timelines.

Communication Throughout

You won't be left wondering what's happening with your bouquet. You'll receive confirmation when we receive your flowers, messages during the various phases (especially for Peony Experience clients), and a shipping notification when your piece is on its way.

Why Patience Pays Off

We know 6+ months feels like a long time. But consider: your preserved piece will last for decades, rushing compromises quality, and good things are worth waiting for. Many clients tell us receiving their preserved bouquet months after the wedding is like reliving the day all over again.

"I am blown away by the results of my preserved bouquet! The colors stayed vibrant and the arrangement is stunning. Such a unique and beautiful way to remember your wedding day! Highly recommend Element Design."

How Preservation Compares

DIY home drying: Free, but results are unpredictable and often disappointing.

Other preservation services: $300-800+, results vary widely.

Pressed Bouquet Shop: $125-495, professional proven results from 17,000+ bouquets preserved.

When you consider that your wedding bouquet cost $200-500+ and will be gone in a week without preservation, professional preservation offers tremendous value for something you'll keep for a lifetime.

Already Dried Bouquet? Your Options

Maybe your wedding was months or years ago. Maybe you hung your bouquet to dry, hoping to figure out what to do with it later. Good news: you still have options.

Understanding the Limitation

Here's the important thing to know: already dried flowers cannot press flat. Attempting to press them would cause them to crumble and fall apart. The pressing process requires fresh flowers with moisture still in the petals. But that doesn't mean your dried bouquet is beyond saving.

Option 1: Petal Confetti Resin

Our primary method for dried bouquets involves creating beautiful petal confetti keepsakes. We carefully separate your dried petals to resemble confetti, then artfully incorporate them into resin pieces. Optional metallic gold or silver accents enhance the finished piece.

Works beautifully for: Resin coasters, serving trays, ring dishes, and display pieces.

This creates a unique, artistic look that celebrates your wedding flowers in a completely different way than traditional pressed arrangements.

Option 2: Bouquet Recreation

Want your preserved piece to look exactly like your original bouquet? Our recreation service is the perfect solution. Send us your wedding photos, we identify every flower in your original arrangement, our team sources fresh flowers that match your bouquet, standard pressing proceeds with the fresh flowers, and you receive a framed piece that captures your original bouquet's appearance.

This option works regardless of whether your dried bouquet still exists—we only need your wedding photos. Recreations are ideal for capturing the visual sentiment of your original bouquet, anniversary gifts (especially meaningful at 1, 5, or 10 years), and when your dried bouquet is too fragile to work with.

How Old Can Dried Flowers Be?

There's no expiration date! We've worked with dried bouquets that are 10+ years old. As long as the flowers haven't completely deteriorated, we can create something beautiful with them.

"They are so beautiful and made the most special gifts! The quality exceeded my expectations and the process was seamless. Highly recommend Element for anyone wanting to preserve their flowers."

FAQs

Here are answers to the most common questions we receive about wedding bouquet preservation. Read all FAQs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my flowers are fresh enough to preserve?

If petals are still pliable (not crispy) and colors are still vibrant, your flowers are likely good candidates. When in doubt, ship them to us and we'll assess upon arrival.

Can I preserve just part of my bouquet?

Absolutely! If only certain flowers are in good condition, we'll work with what we have. Every petal tells part of your story.

What if my bouquet has non-flower elements (ribbons, pins, charms)?

We can often incorporate these elements into your preserved piece. Let us know what's meaningful to you.

Do you preserve flowers other than wedding bouquets?

Yes! We preserve flowers from anniversaries, memorials, graduations, and other special occasions.

Can I request specific flowers be featured prominently?

Yes, especially with our Peony Experience service level. Share your preferences and we'll accommodate where possible.

What happens if some of my flowers don't survive shipping?

We work with what arrives in good condition. If significant damage occurs, we'll contact you to discuss options.

Will I see my piece before it's finalized?

Peony Experience clients receive digital proofs for approval. Tulip Experience pieces are designed based on your initial preferences.

How long will my preserved piece last?

With proper care (away from direct sunlight and humidity), your preserved piece can last indefinitely. Our earliest pieces from 2016 still look beautiful.

How do I care for my preserved frame?

Keep away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperatures. Dust the glass gently as needed. That's it!

Do you ship internationally?

We receive bouquets from across the United States. International shipping involves additional complexity—contact us to discuss.

What if I can't ship within 5 days of my wedding?

Ship as soon as you can. Flowers that arrive later may have reduced quality, but we'll always do our best with what we receive.

Can I visit your studio?

Local clients can schedule appointments to drop off flowers or pick up finished pieces. We're located in Easton, Pennsylvania.
